Eugene Wessley
Eugene has spent the past 22 years enjoying retirement in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where he resides on the Cisco Chain of Lakes just over the Wisconsin border. During the long, cold winters, he discovered a passion for wildfowl carving, with a particular focus on loons. Using hand-harvested basswood, pine, cedar, and wormy butternut, Eugene crafts each piece by hand, with some carvings taking up to 60 hours to complete.
When not fishing, hunting, or shoveling snow, Eugene can be found in his workshop, where he expands his creative talents beyond wildlife carvings to include toys, ships, and other unique items. Each creation reflects his love of the craft, which he pursues for pleasure and relaxation. Known for his generosity, Eugene enjoys gifting his intricate works to friends and family.
More recently, Eugene has shared his love of carving with the next generation, teaching his grandsons the art and joy of woodworking. His work, a blend of tradition and creativity, continues to be a source of fulfillment and connection.
