Optical Foolery
This Mural was created by: Alan Clough
When I was asked to create a design on the back of the WOW space building, as well as a color palette for the rest of the building, I really became excited. It was a daunting prospect for me to bring the outside of the historic building back to life.
I chose a juxtaposition between modern and historic along with the use of colors that would unify the mural and the rest of the building. In doing so, I feel the building has evolved into a one of a kind piece of Art.
I have always been intrigued with how the use of perspective and repeated geometric shapes can confuse the eye. Giving the mural and OP Art/Art Deco flavor has created the illusion of space and movement. I hope those who view my design will be challenged to figure out if what they see is really there, thus, its name -- "OPTICAL FOOLERY."
Without the vision of Lois Smith and her persistence to achieve excellence, the project would not have come to reality. I would like to thank her for trusting me with such a significant commission.
