The Art of the Quilter XI: "Finely" Finished 2025

Peoples' Choice Awards:

First place quilt was "Caring Friends and Gentle Hands" by the Quilting Friends of Hatley. Second place went to Sonia Miller for "A Prophecy in Silk and Cotton" (bright pink stars on black background.) Third place was "Falling Maple Leaves" by Terry Hillman and Pine Tree Quilters. The award of excellence went to Mary Koeppel for her quilt "Pinafores and Pinwheels."

Art of the Quilter X– Sew Bee It

4 Awards were presented at the Art of the Quilter X– Sew Bee It quilt show at the Walls of Wittenberg WOWSPACE.  41 quilts including 2 antique quilts and 3 commemorative wallhangings were displayed at the show which ran for 3 weekends.  The show included the quilted creations of 24 different quilters from 9 different cities.

 

225 visitors signed the guest book.

Award of Excellence

This award recognizes the high level of technical skill and difficulty employed by the quilter.  The recipient is chosen by local quilt club quilters with entries in the show.

 

The Award of Excellence went to Teresa Locknane, Wausau, WI for her quilt titled Sunflowers.  Teresa’s wallhanging featured sunflowers created using a raw edge applique technique.

 

People’s Choice

3 Peoples’ Choice awards were presented based on votes cast by visitors to the show who were asked to vote for the quilt or quilts which appealed to them the most. Each visitor was allowed 3 votes.

1st place went to Linda Peterson of Weston, WI for Lakeshore.  Linda’s quilt employed soft hues of blue and green batiks in a complicated overall design  which incorporated many traditional block patterns.

 

2nd place was awarded to Dar Ryba-Borchardt of  Wittenberg, WI for Cost of Freedom. Depicting a variety of scenes in the life of our soldiers, Dar beautifully pays honor to our veterans and the fallen of the Vietnam War through the use of machine embroidery.

 

3rd place was awarded to Marge Mech of Wausau, WI for Chenille Warmth.  Her quilt made of plaid flannels, employed a unique technique of creating chenille strips to pull the whole piece together.

Quilters near and far! We invite you to participate in our 10th open quilt show at the WOWSPACE in Wittenberg, WI.   This is a non-juried, non-judged show.  1st, 2nd, and 3rd place People’s Choice awards and an Award of Excellence will be given.

The 2024 show will feature:

  • 40+ quilts on display
  • a featured antique quilt
  • a featured quilter
  • a selection of orphan quilt blocks available for a suggested donation 

Show admission is FREE.

2023 Art of the Quilter IX– Sew Inspired

 

4 Awards were presented at the Art of the Quilter IX– Sew Inspired quilt show at the Walls of Wittenberg WOWSPACE.  41 quilts were displayed at the show which ran for 3 weekends.  The show included the quilted creations of 22 different quilters from 13 different cities as well as 2 antique quilts.

 

179 visitors signed the guest book from 39 cities.

 

2023 Award of Excellence

 

The Award of Excellence went to Julie Lambert of Weston, WI for her quilt titled Feathered Star.  Julie’s quilt featured a difficult star pattern with perfect points, intricate quilting done on a standard sewing machine, a binding flange, and ombre background color.  This award recognizes the high level of technical skill and difficulty employed by the quilter.  The recipient is chosen by local quilt club quilters with entries in the show.

 

2023 People’s Choice

 

3 Peoples’ Choice awards were presented based on votes cast by visitors to the show who were asked to vote for the quilt or quilts which appealed to them the most. Each visitor was allowed 3 votes.

1st place went to Cindy Brouillard of Mosinee, WI for Abilene.  Cindy used a quilt collage technique that intrigued many to complete her portrait of a cow.

 

2nd place was awarded to Mary Beth Koeppel of Wittenberg, WI for Big Red. Her quilt featured a large center star surrounded by similar smaller stars in a variety of deep reds.

 

3rd place was awarded to Chris Malluege of Birnamwood, WI for Pillowcase Whimsy.  Her quilt incorporated embroidered vintage pillowcases embellished by intricate free motion quilting.

 

Quilters, thank you for participating in our 8th open quilt show at the WOWSPACE in Wittenberg, WI.   This was a non-juried, non-judged show. 

 

The 2022 show featured:

  • 40+ quilts on display
  • a featured antique quilt
  • a disappearing quilt block display/tutorial
  • a selection of gently used quilting books available for a free will offering

Awards - 2022

Art of the Quilter VIII – Quilty as Charged

 

4 Awards were presented at the Art of the Quilter VIII – Quilty as Charged quilt show at the Walls of Wittenberg WOWSPACE.  43 quilts were displayed at the show which ran for 3 weekends.  The show included the quilted creations of 26 different quilters from 18 different cities as well as 2 antique Grandmother’s Flower Garden creations.

 

Rose Grych of Wausau, WI received the Award of Excellence for her quilt titled My Fresh Cut Flower Garden.  Rose’s quilt was a colorful wool applique embellished with intricate embroidery.  This award recognizes the high level of technical skill and difficulty employed by the quilter.  The recipient is chosen by local quilt club quilters with entries in the show.

 

3 Peoples’ Choice awards were presented based on votes cast by visitors to the show who were asked to vote for the quilt or quilts which appealed to them the most. Each visitor was allowed 3 votes.

1st place went to Marge Beine of Hatley, WI for Purple Elephant.  Marge used paper piecing techniques to create the mosaic effect.

 

2nd place was awarded to Victoria Reigel of Birnamwood, WI for Friendship, Memories and Hope (Camp Toad). Her quilt commemorates the life and love of her husband and gives praise to how women often bless the lives of other women.

 

 

3rd place was awarded to Barb Boettcher of Crivitz, WI for My Quilt of Life.  Incorporating a sampler of colorful pieced blocks of varying sizes appliqued with silhouettes in black, her quilt commemorates many significant events that have made up her life thus far.

Quilters, we thank you for participating in our 7th open quilt show at the WOWSPACE in Wittenberg, WI.   This was a non-juried, non-judged show.  1st, 2nd, and 3rd place People’s Choice and an Award of Excellence awards were given.

 

The 2021 show featured:

  • a vintage Manx quilt
  • Quilting Friends of Hatley deer/bear panel challenge display
  • a disappearing quilt block display/tutorial
  • a selection of gently used quilting books and back issue quilters’ magazines available for a free will offering

Awards - 2021

 

Art of the Quilter VII – Sew On and Sew Forth

 

4 Awards were presented at the Art of the Quilter VII – Sew On and Sew Forth quilt show at the Walls of Wittenberg WOWSPACE.  50 quilts were displayed at the show which ran for 3 weekends.  The show included the quilted creations of 34 different quilters from 16 different cities as well as an antique wool quilt made in the Manx block technique originating on the Isle of Man off the coast of Ireland.

 

Dar Ryba Borchardt of Wittenberg, WI received the Award of Excellence for her quilt titled Splash Points.  Dar’s quilt used a paper piecing technique in a bold contrast of teal, black and white.  This award recognizes the high level of technical skill and difficulty employed by the quilter.

 

3 Peoples’ Choice awards were presented based on votes cast by visitors to the show who were asked to vote for the quilt or quilts which appealed to them the most:

 

1st place went to Rachele Wamboldt of Eland, WI for Classic Mario.  This quilt was made from an overwhelming number of one inch squares which gave it the pixelated appearance of this classic video game offering a real twist on the traditional “postage stamp” quilt.

 

2nd place was awarded to Kathleen Vuchetich of Minocqua, WI for Red and White. This striking quilt paired a simple flying geese pattern in reds, pinks and white with an extremely complex quilting design.

 

3rd place was awarded to Margie Mech of Wausau, WI for Dogwood Blossoms.  This “rescue” quilt sold as a kit in the 1930’s or 1940’s by Herrschner’s. It combines appliqué, embroidery, hand quilting and a scalloped border. It was lovingly finished to its period beauty.

2020

 

“The Art of the Quilter VI – Keep Me In Stitches”

Saturdays and Sundays, 11:00 – 3:00, WOWSPACE

January 18  and 19, January 25 and 26,  February 1 and 2

Quilters, thanks for your participation in our 6th open quilt show at the WOWSPACE in Wittenberg, WI.   This was a non-juried, non-judged show. 37 quilts were displayed at the show which ran for 3 weekends. The show included the quilted creations of 22 different quilters from 12 different cities as well as an antique baby quilt and a redwork signature quilt on loan from the Wittenberg Historical Society.

Linda Krueger, owner of Pinery Patches in Tigerton, Wisconsin received the Award of Excellence for her quilt titled Christmas Street. This award was determined by a quilter's choice vote of the quilters with work in the show. The decision recognizes the high level of technical skill employed by the quilter. 

3 Peoples' Choice awards were presented based on approximately 160 votes cast by visitors to the show who were asked to vote for the quilt which appealed to them the most.

1st place went to Debra Court of Black Creek, Wisconsin for Memories of Vietnam. This quilt was made from old army uniforms worn by her husband, Robert, during his basic training and service in Vietnam. This quilt will one day be passed down to her two sons.

2nd place was awarded to Mary Beth Koeppel of Wittenberg, Wisconsin for Galaxy of Geese. Her quilt was made of 1930's reproduction fabrics in a variety of pastels and includes 476 Flying Geese units in the overall design.

3rd place was awarded to Gloria Kohn of Birnamwood, Wisconsin for her quilt titled Tumbling Stars which she refers to as a "Someday Quilt" for her oldest granddaughter, who will receive it either as a wedding gift or housewarming gift for her first house.

The 2020 show featured an Honor Quilt display and a selection of gently used quilting books and back issue quilters’ magazines available for a free will offering.   Show admission was FREE. (The guest speaker cancelled due to the weather and we weren't able to reschedule.)

2019

 

January 19 - February 3rd, 201"The Art of the Quilter V - Stiches in Time" sponsored by Applewood Lane Alpacas and CWECoop. 4 awards were presented at the quilt show and 38 quilts submitted by 25 quilters were displayed at the show.

Carol Hauser of Green Bay received the Award of Excellence for her quilt titled On Ringo Lake.  It was selected by veteran award winning quilters from among the 38 quilts entered.  This award recognizes the high level of technical skill employed by this quilter in completing her quilt.

3 People’s Choice Awards were presented based on the approximately 180 votes cast by visitors to the show.  Visitors were asked to cast their ballot for the quilt which appealed to them most. First Place People’s Choice went to Bernice Hamilton of Pelican Lake for Memories of Friends.  This sampler quilt includes 70 different blocks and is intricately quilted by Debbie Weber. Second Place People’s Choice was awarded to Dar Borchardt of Wittenberg for her quilt titled Mom’s Quilt.  Cross-stitched blocks completed by Dar’s mother, Lucille Ryba, were machine pieced and hand quilted by Dar. Third Place People’s Choice went to Babette Zehren of Wausau for Cross-Country Skier.  This quilt incorporates cross-country ski race t-shirts, applique and American Birkebeiner/Kortelopet ski race bibs and truly honors her husband’s 37 years of fun and hard work as a skier.  Her quilt was machine quilted by Jan Meachen.

 

2018

 

January 13 - January 28th, 2018 "The Art of the Quilter: IV" sponsored by Applewood Lane Alpacas  was our 4th open quilt show combining color, design, creativeness and stitchery into beautiful quilted masterpieces was outstanding and well attended. About 150 votes were cast for the People's Choice Awards and 1st place went to Judy Groshek, Hatley - for "Autumn Glory", 2nd place to Lori Lutzow, Antigo - for "Garbage Can Pineapple" and 3rd place went to Sue Nordwig, Leopolis - for "Legacy Quilt".  Be sure to come next year to cast your vote!

 

2017

 

January 14th - January 29th, 2017  "Home Grown, Home Sewn" The quilt show returned in 2017!  WOW sponsored a unique quilt and wall hanging show in January, featuring quilters from the greater Wittenberg area.  These local quilters were enthusiastic about sharing their skills and passion for their quilted masterpieces in the artistry of design, creativity, color, and detailed sewing perfection.  Twelve local quilters participated in this show, exhibiting over 40 quilts and wall hangings.  A special “Thank you” to Dar Borchardt, Mary Beth Koeppel, and Margie Mech for helping plan and implement the success of this show.

 

2015

 

August 8, 2015: Rene Iannarelli discussed "Moving from Traditional to Art Quilting"  at the WOWSPACE!

 

August 1, 2015:"Fiber Friends Fabrications" Quilt Show, our 3rd invitational quilt show featured the work of Fiber Friends, an art quilt group from Northern WI.  

2014

February 8, 2014 Sharon Rotz presented "Oh My Stars: What I Have Learned," everything you wanted to know about star quilts and much, much more! at the Wittenberg Community Center, 208 W. Vinal Street, downtown Wittenberg. Once again, the audience delighted in Sharon's presentation, replete with beautiful examples of the various star quilts!

 

January 25, 2014 Louise Schotz presented "A Quilters Eye Views South African Arts,' illustrating her talk with many pieces of purchased art work: embroideries, ceramics, screen prints, beaded animals, jewelry and wood carvings, each piece telling a story about the people and the country of South Africa. Many brave souls risked driving the treacherous roads to hear this presentation at the Wittenberg Community Center.

 

January 25, 2014 "The Art of the Quilter: III," our 3rd judged quilt show of wall hangings and bed quilts. Show opened January 25 and ran through February 16. Sharon Rotz, Mosinee, judged the show and awarded the following honors: Best of Show: Bed Quilts, Joanne Grimes, Neenah for "Prism Starburst," a riot of color and explosive design of heart, flowers, all set off by starbursts of black and white. "Maple Leaves" by Kathryn French, Rhinelander received an Award of Excellence: Bed Quilts for her quilt of blocks of multi-colored maple leaves. Award of Honor: Bed Quilts was given to Jane Marx, Scandinavia, for "African Anne."

Maribeth Schmit, Cedarburg, captured Best of Show: Wall Hangings for "The Sentinel," an orginal design of a large and watchful pelican in somber blue, greys, whites and brown. He sits atop a piling, the sky behind him a vibrant sunset. Meredith Miller, Scandinavia, created "Seated at the Table of Democracy: How Do You Take Your Politics?" that received the Award of Excellence: Wall Hangings. Linda Krueger, Tigerton, created her own version of a Baltimore album quilt with "Book and Birds" and received an Award of Honor: Wall Hangings. The Judge's Favorite Award was given to Mary Sipiorski, Stevens Point, for her wall hanging "Pinwheel Petals." Nueske's District #3 Antiques and Nueske's Applewood Smoked Meats were the sponsors for this show. Bad weather was an intermittent problem both before and throughout the show. The invitational show in 2015 will be in the summer!
